Is there a cheaper oral semaglutide pill?

Yes. Novo Nordisk also sells an oral version of Wegovy through the same NovoCare self-pay program, and it undercuts the injectable at every comparable tier. The tablet starts at $149 a month for the 1.5mg dose, rises to $199 a month at 4mg, and holds at $299 a month for both the 9mg and 25mg maintenance doses, the same price despite the dose nearly tripling. That is $50 to $200 a month less than the injectable pen at matching stages of treatment. The tradeoff is a fasting rule the injection does not have: take the pill first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with no more than four ounces of water, then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other oral medication. In its OASIS 4 approval trial, oral Wegovy produced 16.6% average weight loss, in line with the injectable pen's results. Why did compounded semaglutide get so much harder to find in 2026?

The FDA removed semaglutide from its drug shortage database in February 2025, which eliminated the legal basis mass compounders had used to produce cheaper copies of Wegovy and Ozempic. On April 30, 2026, the FDA went a step further and proposed excluding semaglutide, tirzepatide, and liraglutide from the 503B bulks list entirely, finding no clinical need for outsourcing facilities to compound them from bulk drug substance now that the brand-name versions are widely available. A 503A pharmacy can still compound semaglutide for an individual patient with a documented clinical reason, such as an allergy to an inactive ingredient, but compounding it simply as a cheaper substitute for the commercial drug is no longer the legal basis it was during the shortage years.
